“We must do what we must.”
Les Misérables, Victor Hugo
(Jean Valjean, Book One “The War Between Four Walls”, Chapter VIII “The Gunners Taken Seriously”)
I’ve always thought this was one of the most humanizing scenes for Enjolras in the brick. We aren’t seeing him as the archangel or the “fine marble”; we’re seeing him as a young man who feels compassion for the other young man on the other side of the barricade.
Combeferre in this scene on some level must know that his pleas for the life of the artillery sergeant are not going to move Enjolras from what he views as a necessity. Does Combeferre know that he’s just making it more difficult for Enjolras? I think he does; and I think Combeferre just cannot bear the idea that dealing out death should ever be something that comes easily to his friend.
If I was an author, I’d go into bookstores and find the shelf with my books, randomly sign one, and put it back on the shelf to be sold.
